Obama supports same-sex marriage!

On Wednesday, May 9th, the world was informed that the foremost leader of the most free nation on Earth supports same-sex marriage. President Obama has finally “evolved” as the headlines so eloquently put it. I have communicated with other friends of mine on Facebook whom actually found this whole ordeal a little fishy, as this decision was just made in the height of presidential campaigning procedures.

First of all, I too find this decision to be a MAJOR card just played to place a certain person in front of the presidential candidacy line. However, I find it to be a smart move. When Americans reflect on previous presidential campaigns, each candidate will make promises, hopes, etc. that will provide them a face to people who are currently suffering, or tired of the current regime and their practices. So, it is not uncommon to find some presidential candidates that will utilize more social movement-based agendas as their platform to win the race, while some will use a strict economic-based platform to appeal to others, and some utilize a mixture of the two. Regardless of the platforms being used, it is up to the person to decide what is important to them in a leader. However, that is not to say that being ignorant (not being knowledgable in a specific area of emphasis) is an excuse to blatantly vote for only Republicans or Democrats. You will find that many “Republicans” will change their party affiliation to Democratic only to still hold their current political practices and beliefs.

Getting back on the same-sex marriage issue, you will not only find LGBT people voting in favor of the man who will essentially bring equality and the pursuit of happiness to them, but you will also find that people who identify as a minority tend to vote along these same parameters. Minority groups (sexual-based, race and ethnic-based minorities) tend to suffer from many of the horizontal hostile intentions from a group that identifies as the majority stake-holder. In this instance, white, heterosexual, Christian males tend to make up the majority stake-holders in the United States. So, while people feel that African-Americans or Latin-Americans will not vote in favor of gay marriage due to their predominantly perceived religious affiliations, you would be wrong.

While religion is a large factor in how minority groups function as a whole, when a pressing and discriminatory agent is still lingering, it is almost impossible to turn a blind eye to that situation and rationalize that they have no ties to the injustices being committed. In other words, you will find that most of your minority groups will vote in favor of both a law that would dismantle a discriminatory agent as well as the person who appeals to people who are under represented, not heard, not seen, etc. The foundation of this country does not rest of revolve around the single criteria of religion, as many people tend to cherry-pick around. You will find that the foundation of this country, was to allow people to practice freedom of religion free from persecution, obtain land, and to be individuals. The basis of conservative practices actually roots this perspective in their laws, agendas, etc. However, with a mixture of a heavily weighted religious foundation to the political party, it is no wonder that we are finding extreme polar opposites in liberals and conservatives.

To end this post, let me mention that no one has ever achieved anything by sitting idle. Voicing opposition is the forefront of being a democratic nation. Just because a law exists does not mean it is appropriate or even human by proxy. Laws are man-made, we have the ability to change them. President Obama is the man who could ultimately make a huge change on a subject that has been so controversial, that it could be political suicide for him to have made this decision. Obama has my support, as a fellow gay man, I for one will vote for a person who will allow me to pursue my happiness, allowing me to marry my fiancé of three years, allowing us to be together without the threat of my fiancé being deported if his visa ever expired or became invalid (for whatever reason). No one person has the right to decide who can love and who cannot.

My fiancé was able to record this on his iPhone last night!

This is an excerpt from Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, for bass trombonists out there, this would be that excerpt that is predominantly asked at EVERY audition for any major orchestra audition.

Richardson Symphony Orchestra in the Dallas Morning News!

As I Googled “Richardson Symphony,” one of the top 5 results that came up was an article that was just published on April 14th in regards to the RSO’s season finale.

I especially like this quote: “Strings sounded better than I can remember in the last dozen years; violins and cellos were especially polished. Winds were sometimes fine, sometimes charmless. Trombones played impressively…”

Richardson Symphony plays Beethoven Symphony No. 9!

Hello again,

I wanted to take this opportunity now that the RSO has just finished its’ “official” season finale concert and mention that there is still one more concert of equal magnificence to be seen and heard. The RSO in conjunction with the First United Methodist Church Chancel Choir and Highland Park United Methodist Church Chancel Choir will be performing as a 200-member chorus along with key soloists to present Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 the “Choral Symphony”…aka “Ode to Joy.”

For many aspiring professional bass trombonists, this program also provides you the opportunity to listen and see how that famous bass trombone solo that is asked at virtually all major orchestral auditions is presented in context with an orchestra.

The concert is at 7:30pm at the First United Methodist Church of Richardson (they are contracting us to play). Tickets start at $18.

I will also try to snag some pictures of the rehearsal, maybe some video too.

Hello!

April 14th came and passed with much anticipation and excitement from both Anshel Brusilow and the musicians of the Richardson Symphony Orchestra. From the time that the orchestra branched away from the American Federation of Musician’s Union (Dallas chapter) in 2010, the orchestra went through some obvious, anticipated and expected fluctuations in functionality and the cohesiveness that is required to perform as a professional orchestra in today’s society.

With that being said, the caliber of musicianship that has been displayed has changed from its’ former establishment with previous musicians that once took part in the music-making with the RSO. The crowning achievement with the new RSO, was the Tchaikovsky. After two years of auditioning, evaluating and bonding new musicians with already existing RSO musicians, the new RSO has an attitude that not many orchestras develop. In the face of protest, fear and uncertainty, the April 14th concert displayed some of the finest playing that the RSO has seen since the creation of this orchestra.

Just as an FYI, the April 14th concert was recorded for professional CD production, which will be announced soon. Until then, take a look at the YouTube video that was recorded by one of the audience members.

Staff Sgt. Bales

Within the recent month, many news stations such as CNN, FOX, and MSNBC have been speculating on the events surrounding the alleged murders that Staff Sgt. Robert Bales committed during his tour of Afghanistan. For those of you who are not familiar with the situation at hand, please allow me to run down the synopsis.

On March 11th, 2012, Bales had allegedly left a remote outpost in Kandahar province’s Panjwai district, going door-to-door shooting people within those houses. It is proposed that 16 people died, with one additional person dying, making the total count 17, but there has been no conclusive evidence to suggest that the 17th death is connected, or directly related to Bale’s alleged rampage.

Now that you have the synopsis, it is interesting to know the legal approaches being applied in this situation. One way end, you have prosecutors seeking murder charges for 17 deaths, with a maximum penally of death (which will be sought), with a minimum penalty of life imprisonment (with possibility of parol). Afghan delegates want Bales to be tried and brought to justice back in Afghanistan, however, it has been determined that he will be tried in the United States. People who defend Bales are bringing into play the ideas of mental instability, his prolonged exposure to mentally disturbing situations and environments, as well as painting a circular picture of his overall heroism as a U.S. service member.

Placing aside his dedication to the military (which is commendable), taking the proposed mental instability is a HUGE variable in the weight that will be given to this man’s judgement. For those who do not understand the legal approach to deciding if one is to be deemed “mentally unfit” or “insane” is to apply a single to multiple diagnoses from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual IV (the fifth edition will be published soon). This manual provides many areas of psychiatric classes (eating disorders psychotic disorders, anxiety disorders, etc.). Within each of these classes, is a list of disorders, and indicators that could lead to the disorders.

So how is this important? The legal panel will utilize mental health professionals to provide an analysis of Bales, that will either allow him to be tried as a mentally fit person, or insane…at least by legal definition (because even law officials distort, contort and mold the DSM to their fitting for their case). So, the proposed hypothesis for Bales is, that he suffers from an untreated version of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), which is found commonly amongst soldiers, veterans, infants and women (yes, women and infants actually make up a ver large portion of PTSD patients…I can explain in another post later).

For Bales, this could be a great outlet to avoid a military prison with a life sentence, as well as the death penalty. So, applying a label and diagnosis to Bales is going to be very difficult, as he has had no prior mental health issues that were ever rendered to his superiors, colleagues, etc. (at least it hasn’t been made open to the public). For this instance, to clinically diagnose someone with PTSD, by the DSM standards, the person will need to display fear, terror, and the perceived sense of danger when no apparent threat is near, lasting more than a month post-traumatic experience. Again, this event that just happened this month, could be a prolonged and untreated version of PTSD that has been developing for months, possibly years now. Finding the focal point, or origin point is essential in order to calculate the interval between a plausible traumatic experience, and the March incident. Even pinpointing traumatic experiences are not always reliable, as it can distort further investigations (if Bales admits to 3-4 different traumatic experiences, which one triggered the sense of fear, danger, and terror?).

To wrap up the article, while I do believe that people in this instance, regardless of wealth, title, profession, age, sex, religion, nationality, etc. should face the maximum penalty for the alleged crimes stipulated by government officials of both the United States and Afghanistan, it is also important to evaluate the validity of the proposed mental health instability, as well as alternative explanations, as well as concrete evidence that remotely supports the allegations. It is important to realize that the United States and most middle-eastern nations have a very different legal system, and in some ways, one can be superior than the other in context to the situation being judged. In this case, allowing the involvement of Afghanistan officials into the legal procedures is vital for foreign relations. You would need to think, how would we respond to this if something like this were to happen to us (probably a full invasion!…yes Bush, I am talking to you).
